Pet First Aid Kits

Be Prepared!

Emergencies can happen at any place or time. Being prepared is the best thing that you can do for your pet . A first-aid kit will help to reduce anxiety if an emergency does occur. Keep the kit at the ready and continue to update all of the items in the kit, making sure nothing has expired. First aid kits should be kept in properly labeled containers. A small plastic toolbox, tackle box, cosmetic box or sewing box will be sufficient to hold all of the necessary equipment. Purchasing your supplies first will give you a better idea as to what size box you will need.

Label It:

A properly labeled box includes:

1. Your name, address and telephone number on the outside of the box in case you lose it.

2. The telephone number of your veterinarian and a local veterinary emergency facility.

Place It:

The more complete your first aid kits are the better you can deal with emergencies as they come up. The best time to assemble those kits is now. If you wait until an emergency happens, you will be too late.

Keep the box in one easily accessed location and make sure that everyone knows where it is. The best first aid kit in the world will not help when no one can find it. However, it should be stored out of the reach of very young children and pet s.

The general places you should keep a first aid kit are:

1. Your Home

2. Your Car

3. Your Job

Discuss It:

While you’re away, be sure to discuss your pet s with your pet -sitters. Make sure they understand what you consider an emergency, how to contact you, the name and phone number of a secondary contact person you trust to make such decisions for you if you cannot be reached, and where to take your pet in case of an emergency.

Make It:

It is also a good idea to have separate information sheets for each pet . Include a photo of each pet with the name, age, breed, sex, identification, and any health problems. This can help if your pet is lost or if someone unfamiliar with your pet is needed to care for it.
