How to get pet allergies under control

Approximately 15 out of 100 people are allergic to dogs or cats, yet, one third of those allergic to cats live with pets, and one study revealed that 20 percent of participants whose doctors recommended giving up their pets refused. According to the HSUS website, surviving allergies while living with a pet “requires a good understanding of the allergic condition and adherence to a few rules.�
Q: Can a person be allergic to one dog or cat but not another?
A: There’s no such thing as a non-allergenic breed. However, individual reactions vary. Most people are more allergic to cats than dogs, or a person may be allergic to just cats or just dogs.
Q: What causes allergies?
A: Glands in the pet’s skin release proteins called allergens. Allergens stick to the fur or float in the air, where they are inhaled and initiate allergies.
Q: My allergies aren’t severe, but I’m uncomfortable. What can I do?
A: The severity of allergic reaction can be significantly reduced by combining the following solutions:
n Limit pets’ access to specific areas, like the bedroom
n Use HEPA air filters on air conditioning, dust and vacuum frequently, replace worn carpet with non-fabric flooring
n Wash pets weekly
n Ask your doctor to test specifically for pet-dander allergies. Other controllable factors besides your pet may contribute to the problem
n Ask your doctor for advice on controlling symptoms through hypoallergenic shots and other medications
