Choosing A Groomer For Your Special Pet

May 9, 2006 by pet-admin

Many people will have a new puppy join their family around the Christmas season. Some dogs need to be groomed on a regular basis. I will share a story about why it is important to be careful about choosing a groomer.

I had a schnauzer named: “Kuddles and I didn’t know anything about choosing a groomer. So, I called a local pet shop and asked what I thought were good questions and received good answers. So, I dropped my precious dog off there. When, I picked her up after the grooming was finished – she had cuts all over her. I felt so bad for her and I was more careful when choosing the next groomer. I finally found one that worked through a vet’s office and was kind and had compassion for Kuddles. She even offered to let me stay during the grooming.

Here are some basic things to consider when choosing a groomer. Check with family and friends to see who they trust to groom their dog. Don’t be afraid to ask questions such as: Has your dog come home with cuts or bruises? Do you have any reservations about this groomer (sometimes people will take their dog to a groomer because it is convenient – even though they are not satisfied)?
If you have a groomer you would like to consider – then give them a call. Here are some questions to ask: How long have they been grooming pets? Ask how many dogs they have groomed that are your dogs breed? Ask if you can stop by and observe them grooming a dog? If they refuse don’t even consider taking your dog there. If they allow you to observe pay careful attention to how the dog reacts to the groomer. Are they at peace or fearful? Ask questions about if they give the dog something to calm them down? I prefer not to let my dog be given drugs to calm her down. This is a decision a pet owner will have to decide for themselves. Is the facility clean and are the animals groomed there required to have up to date immunizations and health certificate?

Ask the groomer if they are a member of a dog groomers association and if they are certified to groom dogs? Where did they receive their training to groom dogs? Check to see if your state requires a groomer to be certified in flea/tick applications. If so, ask if the groomer is certified.

Please, be courteous when you call and ask if this is a good time for the groomer to give information about her services. It may not be a good time if she is grooming a dog. The best idea might be to call for an appointment to talk to the groomer.

Finally, trust your feelings. If you sense something isn’t right – then don’t leave your dog. Continue looking until you find a groomer you can trust.
