Dealing with lost-pet problems? Simple strategies still work well

Effective solutions to lost pets are still low-tech or no-tech.
If you lost your pet go to Go to your nearest shelters if you’ve lost a pet. People often wait for days before they even look for a lost pet. This is especially true of cats. In 2004, owners reclaimed almost half of the 4,300 stray dogs that found their way to the Multnomah County shelter. But only 176 out of 4,600 stray cats were reclaimed by their families.
Also, put up posters, talk with neighbors and contact your neighborhood veterinary offices. Lost cats usually find a hiding place within two blocks of their homes, so ask permission to check in your neighbor’s crawl spaces, sheds and hedges.
Put visible tags on your pet. Give contact information where you can be found 24 hours a day. “This isn’t the time to be cryptic,” says Barbara Baugnon of the Oregon Humane Society.
Microchip your pet. This is pretty boring technology compared with satellite-based global positioning systems, but it works. A microchip is a rice-sized computer chip that’s injected into a dog, cat, bird or other pet. Almost all veterinary offices and animal shelters have scanners that read the chips. Prevent the problem. Keep your kitties indoors. I keep an exercise pen (a little portable fence) circled around my front door so my dogs and cat can’t dash. Be sure the backyard fence is secure, with no places a clever animal can squeeze through.
If you find a pet, find the owner. Don’t assume an animal was dumped. Within hours, even a well-loved, well-cared-for pet will look hungry and scared, and may even be injured. “There could be a little boy someplace crying his eyes out for that dog,” says Baugnon. Animal shelters are the best resource for reuniting a lost animal with its owner.
