One can buy just about anything on the world wide web, animals no exception. Knowing this, just how safe is it to buy a dog online?
Online pet classifieds are growing in popularity due to the ease at which a pet transaction can be made. Broadcasting to the world that you have a litter for sale is easy to do online due to the far reaching super highway that spans the globe called the internet.
Veterinarians do not approve of internet purchasing of live dogs due to backyard breeders being able to sell directly to the consumer without needing to have their dogs tested which would of course result in the consumer looking elsewhere. Furthermore, what you see, what you pay big money for, and what shows up at your door can be totally different entirely. “Too often what happens is, someone gets stuck with a puppy that requires thousands of dollars in vet bills or they have a dead puppy,” said Stephanie Shain, who runs the anti-puppy-mill campaign for the Humane Society of the United States. “And there is very little recourse for these people.”
Senator Rick Santorum, realizing the damage that was being done by backyard breeders put a law proposal on the table, making it manditory for any would-be breeder who sells more than 25 dogs a year, to be officially lisenced as a breeder. The Pet Animal Welfare Statute, is currently in the process of being review.
