How to Stop Your Dog From Chewing
December 5, 2006 by pet-admin
Nothing is more frustrating than finding something your dog has destroyed. One of the toughest challenges a pet owner can face is how to stop the dog from chewing once the dog has started this behavior.
I own a six year old male Japanese Akita named Cado and he is a real handfull. He was even more so when he was a younger dog, thankfully age has mellowed some of his less desirable behaviors.
Whenever I used to leave him with a friend or on his own for too long he liked to chew something up. Whether it was a cushion, part of the couch, or a mattress corner basically it was a real pain in the ass!
There are a few ways I know of to help stop your dog from chewing. First make sure your dog is getting regular exercise. This means at least 30 minutes of vigourous walking every day. The good thing about this is it is good for you too! Regular exercise will help your dog relieve tension and stress and make it easier for them to relax.
You also want to make sure that your dog has at least one or two things to chew on. This can be rawhide, beef/pork bones, pig ears, etc. Also, give them their own area with a bed or a few towels or old blankets. Show them the area with their new toys and encourage them to chew on their toys so that they can begin to form healthy chewing habits.
Take time each day to reinforce the dog’s chewing on their new toys/bones, this way you can stop the dog from chewing on YOUR things!
