Cars are a danger to pets and children

Over heating inside of a car is unfortunately, a common cause of death for pets and children during the warm summer months. Even a vehicle with the windows rolled down slightly can become an oven within minutes. Now that the weather is warming, keep your pets at home unless absolutely necessary. NEVER under any curcumstances leave a child or a pet in the car even for a few minutes.

Many pet owners mistakenly think that by parking in the shade or leaving the windows cracked slightly, that the car will remain cool enough. The reality is that these pet owners often return to the car to find their pet is either in serious distress or dead.

General Motors has joined efforts with National SAFE KIDS® campaign to help protect against parents leaving children in the car during warm, sunny weather. In the last five years, at least 120 children have died after being trapped in hot vehicles.

GM is working on innovative new technology - a low-energy radar sensor - that will be designed to detect the presence of a child in a closed, hot vehicle. Once the sensor detects a child or even a pet in these potentially dangerous conditions, it will alert a caregiver or passersby by sounding a unique horn signal. This is good news for those of us with furry “kids” also. Just as children are in danger from heat related death, so are our pets.
