Tips for People With Pet Allergies
March 15, 2007 by pet-admin
Does your pet make you sneeze?
The Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association suggests the following for people with pet allergies:
# Make sure your pet is really the source of your allergies. Many people mistakenly blame their pets when the real allergy source is something else.
# Wash your hands after petting your animal.
# Bathe your pet often with an exfoliative shampoo to reduce the accumulation of skin dander and shedding hair. Bathing also reduces the oil and bacteria build up that cause skin-irritation. The irritation leads to excessive licking by the pet and results in spread of the shedding hair and dander throughout the house.
# Have your pet groomed often to keep the haircoat as short as possible. Short haircoats have less dander and, because they are poorer insulators, the skin stays cooler and therefore less shedding occurs.
# Spray the pet daily with a humectant (moisturizer) to hold down the dander and shedding hair until it can be removed with bathing.
# Select a pet that sheds less and produces less oil on the skin.
# Pet suits can be worn to provide reduced exposure to allergens.
# Be aware that dusty or deodorized kitty litter is another source of allergens.
The tremendous benefits of animal companionship make it worthwhile to seek ways to live healthfully with your pet. Here are some steps you can take to help bring your pet allergies under control:
# Keep animals out of your bedroom.
# Improve the filtration capabilities of your vacuum cleaner with special filters and bags that trap more particles. Look for a high allergen containment rating in new vacuums.
# Consider replacing your carpet with tile, wood or vinyl flooring and using throw rugs that can be washed.
# Encase your mattress and box spring in vinyl covers, reduce upholstered furniture and wash blankets, curtains and pillows regularly.
# Use an air purifier to help eliminate allergens in the air. Free-standing models are generally more effective than the table-top versions.
# Replace or clean furnaces, ducts, and air conditioner filters often.
# Circulate the air in your house daily by opening windows.
# Keep your home scrupulously clean.
Whether you already own a pet or are thinking about getting one, a veterinarian can advise you on ways to make your relationship with your pet a happy and healthy one. For more information on pet allergies, call your veterinarian.
