How do you care for a 2 year old Shitzu Dog?
September 30, 2007 by pet-admin
1.) How will a male cat and a girl dog shitzu get along?
More than gender it depends on your dog’s temperment and socialization. Animals tend to get along better with the opposite sex, but if the dog dislikes cats then it’s going to dislike all cats. This comes down to training.
2.) When leaving the house should I cage her or block off an area for her because she’s so active?
Is she destructive? I like to give my dogs two walks a day, one before work and one when I get home. This helps keep them from being destructive. If she’s house broken then there’s no need to lock her up.
3) When leaving the house should I put paper down just in case? Accidents can happen.
Accidents don’t really “happen” at two, or they should be so infrequent that paper would be more of a nuicense than anything. Teaching an already housebroken dog to use paper would be counterproductive and confusing to the pooch.
4) Over all health care. Bath, teeth, ears, hair cuts, well visits.
Even if she just had a vet visit, take her in for a second one just to be sure and also so the vet can get you on record as a client and keep you posted of when she’s due in for a physical.
She should be bathed once every six weeks, brushed out once a week, teeth done every night, nails once a week, and ears once a week.
5) How to controll barking at doorbells and people
A firm “No” is usually enough, followed by praise for being quiet.
6) Should I take to a trainer
If she hasn’t had obedience training yet, or if she “relapses” into bad behaviour due to the stress of being relocated, then that would be a good idea. Also training is a good way for the two of you to bond and to establish yourself as pack leader.
7) When to give doggie treats
You’ll figure this one out. ;) You’ll tell yourself “I’m not going to spoil her!” then she’ll look really adorable and you’ll end up spoiling her.
8) Adjusting to a new family
This one is tough, give her lots of love and time. If she doesn’t want to be touched at first, then let her be. She just needs to adjust to the new enviroment, and the new people.
Dogs mourn their packs! She’s going to miss her old family for a while, this doesn’t mean she’ll never be happy with you, it just means that she’s going to be kind of sad for a while. Just keep letting her know that she’s part of your family now and that she’s loved and she’ll come around.
